Historically religion (Christianity and Islam) have been used as a tool for war and control so in many ways than one the major religions we have now are more of a social construct than divine guidance.
They work like cults and seek to trap their believers with the believe that they are the saved one.
I like your approach to this, what happens to the man who is good but doesn't believe, I anticipate the conclusion
